    This position is responsible for the management and resolution of assigned sales and use tax audit/controversy matters including collecting tax audit related information, proactively evaluating tax exposure, developing and implementing audit strategies to defend tax positions and maintaining successful auditor relationships. In addition, this position will identify gaps in controls and design and lead efforts to determine the root cause and implement solutions in order to reduce future audit exposure.

    Responsibilities

    • Manages all facets of assigned sales and use tax audits including evaluating sampling methodologies, analyzing and reconciling data, and developing, then executing audit defense strategies.
    • Analyzes audit schedules, determines nature of errors, calculates liability estimates, develops audit reserve calculation, presents findings and makes recommendations to Manager of Sales Tax and Vice-President of Tax
    • Directs the Sales Tax Accountant in the gathering, analysis, and organization of audit support documentation for review by state tax auditors. 
    • Conducts technical research related to exemption certificate requirements, evaluates internal controls and processes in relation to those requirements, determines impact on the organization, summarizes and communicates those findings to management and key personnel. 
    • Consults with cross functional team members and leads efforts to align merchandise skus with Taxware codes and develops sustainable processes to reduce future audit risk and exposure.
    • Conducts technical research related to sales and use tax issues, summarizes and communicates those findings to management and key personnel. 
    • Directs the Sales Tax Accountant to accurately accrue use tax on fixed asset invoices. 
    • May perform other duties as assigned 

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 5 years of accounting experience preferably including sales tax audit and/or auditing experience; any suitable combination of education and experience will be considered.

         

     

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Training/Systems

     

    • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to draw conclusions from complex data sets, and present strategic recommendations in a logical manner.
    • Ability to interact and team with professionals in various functional areas to resolve complex tax issues throughout the organization
    • Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to establish and defend positions with external auditors Detail oriented approach to daily activities, ability to work with minimal supervision and a self-starter.
    • Ability to multi-task in a high energy environment
    • Proficiency in MS Office products; advanced skills in Excel
    • Experience with SAP and Business Objects preferred, but not required
    • Experience with Taxware or other tax decision software strongly preferred
